Changes in the food and the consumption preferences of the people has led to the development of a variety of foods especially fast foods many of which causes  a number of diet based health ailments such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetic problems, weight gain etc. This is because most of the ready to eat and delicious foods contain trans-fat, sugar, refined flour, white bread etc which are not ideal for health.

Human blood has a pH level of 7.35 to 7.45 and an alkaline diet is aimed to maintain this alkalinity of the blood. Alkaline diet is also known as alkaline acid diet, acid alkaline diet or alkaline ash diet. Fundamentally there are three different types of foods acidic, alkaline and neutral foods and this classification is based on the pH of the ash that is produced after digestion. A pH of 7 is considered neutral while a lower value is acidic and a higher value is alkaline. Alkaline diet is based on the principle of intake of certain foods which gets digested in the body and produce ash or residue that when dissolved in water is of alkaline in nature.

The most interesting part is that this acidic alkaline nature of the food is not based on the acids present in the food rather based on the ash produced after burning the food. For example, lemon juices or orange juices are acidic in their natural form but after digestion it turns in to alkaline due to the nature of the ash produced after metabolism. Ash is alkaline in nature and comprises of copper, zinc, magnesium, calcium, iron etc.

If the diet is high with acidic foods then it leads to the loss of minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium etc from the body as a natural measure of body to restore the equilibrium which in turn causes many serious health ailments. Too much acidic nature of the blood may leads to a dangerous situation called acidosis. An alkaline diet can thus avoid the risks for having osteoporosis, kidney stones, cancer, obesity, fatigue, allergies and also the age related muscle waste.

Alkaline diet is based more on old hunter gatherer lifestyle where only a minimum of processed animal and plant foods were allowed. Include 70 to 80% of the food which are alkaline in nature and 20 to 30% of acidic foods and once the equilibrium is attained then limit the foods of alkaline nature to 65%. An alkaline diet consist mainly of fruits, vegetables, whole foods, root crops, seed spices, nuts, whole grains, lemon juice, beans, legumes etc while green tea and spring water are considered as alkaline beverages.

Common alkaline vegetables include broccoli, spinach, asparagus, carrots, cauliflower, lettuce, carrots, cabbage, celery, greens, peppers, onion, squash, garlic, ginger, lettuce, avocados etc. Of the different alkaline vegetables spinach is considered to have high alkalinity and among the fruits raisins top the list. Most of the fruits are alkaline in nature but certain fruits such as prune, plum, cranberry etc are acidic as the acids in these fruits can’t be metabolized by the body. While making food try to use virgin olive oil, avocado oil or coconut oil. Certain other foods such as fish, grains, meat, cheese, poultry, white breads, alcohol, biscuits, trans fats, sweets, caffeine, shellfish, salt, milk, chips, processed foods etc are acidic foods which has to be limited in the diet. Also drink plenty of water to boost the normal functioning of the body. Alkaline diet helps to improve the digestion and natural cleansing mechanism of the body. It reduces the inflammation and joint pains and improves the energy level of the person and also hastens the weight loss.



Who Should Follow Alkaline Diet?

If a person has a joint pain, weight gain, heart burn, digestive problems, urinary tract problems, excessive mucous production, nasal congestion, anxiety, irritability, fatigue, receding gums, muscle weakness, kidney stones, skin problem, bone loss etc and all other causes of illness have been ruled out that means he or she has an acid base imbalance in the body and need to change the diet to an alkaline diet. Acidic foods lead to deteriorating bone density as the acidic blood dissolves more minerals from the bone and makes the bone poorly nourished and weak.

It is ideal for such people to follow alkaline diet after consulting a doctor. People having kidney diseases and heart diseases must not take this diet. Similarly people under medication that affects the level of potassium in the body should also prohibit themselves from taking this diet.Along with following alkaline diet one should drink plenty of water and do 30 minutes of exercises per day. Check the alkalinity of the blood in between as too much alkalinity is also dangerous and may cause a diseases called alkalosis and hence do not avoid all the acid forming foods instead limit its intake to 25% of the diet.

1 egg scrambled with tomatoes, green onion and leafy vegetables and a cup of ginger tea for breakfast One pear and a handful of unsalted pumpkin seeds as snacks or a handful of unsalted almonds is also ideal as snacks For lunch use 4 ounce of chicken or salmon or tuna or tofu along with 3 cups of mixed vegetables tossed with lemon dill vinaigrette Pasta made out of buckwheat, quinoa, rice or amaranth instead of that of wheat mixed with bitter greens, zucchini, garlic, pine nuts, zest, lemon juice, pepper and salt and a side dish of zucchini prepared with garlic and olive oil. Include seasonal alkaline fruits also to get the maximum nutrients. Alkaline diet being a natural cleansing mechanism helps to flush out the toxins and fat from the body and enhance weight loss.
