A lot of people are under the misconception that diet plans for diabetics consist only of diabetic food. This is not true because the important thing is that the diet plan should be fulfilling with regard to the patient’s condition. It should provide him or her with the adequate nutrition, vitamins and minerals yet not affect the diabetes.

For non-diabetics the blood sugar levels are regulated automatically; however for diabetics these have to be carefully monitored. Ultimately, this diet should not be causing you weight gain or an increase in the blood sugar levels.

The type of diet you should be consuming differs as there is Type 1 diabetes and Type 2. For type 1 patients you need to be cautious about trying to match your food intake with your insulin levels. You also need to be aware of when the insulin levels spike, your rate of metabolism and the speed at which your body digests different foods.

For type 2 patients the focus is more on controlling weight and losing it for the most part. This is done so that the body can efficiently use the amount of insulin it produces.

There are a lot of specifications you need to consider regarding controlling your blood sugar levels. Before meals your levels should be between 80 to 120 mg/dl and before bedtime they shouldn’t be higher than 100 to 140 mg/dl. Your daily meals should consist of 50% to 60% carbohydrate foods, 12% to 20% protein products and fat foods of not more than 30%.

It is really important the meals are evenly spaced out because it will help balance out the blood sugar levels. Depending on the degree of how severe your diabetes is you should always consult and follow a diet plan under the supervision and approval of your doctor.

It is also very important to remember that the food you eat should not help increase cholesterol levels. Make sure that you are getting enough calories from your daily food because if your body starts starving then it will lead to more health problems. Eating a balanced diet will help your diabetes and allow you to lead a happy life.
