Diet also plays an important role in improving your mental and emotional health. There are times when you fell into depression due to some of the food you had. Carbohydrates: Carbohydrate increases the level of serotonin in the body which results in  higher concentration, good sleep and refrains from being depressed. Lowering of serotonin makes the body crave for carbohydrate. Whole grains, fruits, rice, potatoes are rich in carbohydrates and the depressed patient should include these in his diet.

Proteins: Proteins increases alertness and provide more energy. It leads to the formation of dopamine, epinephrine and norepinephrine by way of tyrosine. Lowering of neuro- transmitter level can make one feel anxious. Bananas, chicken and milk and green leafy vegetables induce the growth of dopamine. A nice balance of proteins and carbohydrate can be good for controlling the depression.

Fat: Less level of fat can make people grouchy. Fatty foods induce endorphins and make the person happy. Endorphins are neuro-transmitters. Healthy fats are found in almonds, avocado and olive oils. The omega3 acid helps in reducing depression. It is found in oily fish like salmon.

Vitamins and minerals: Lowering of folic acid or vitamin b12 or vitamin b6 can lead to depression. Oranges, beets, asparagus and soybeans are rich in vitamins and minerals. Lack of selenium in the diet can also cause the patient to be irritable. Brocoli, tuna and eggs have selenium in abundance.

Caffeine: A small amount of caffeine will lift your spirits and make you more alert. Increase in the amount causes headache and insomnia.

Thus without having medication or drugs, you can relieve yourselves from depression. Just make sure you include the right kind of food in the right quantity.
