Among the several factors, good food is important to stay away from all kinds of diseases and cure sickness, if any. Same stands true for diabetes too. The main aim of sticking to a specific diet, in case of diabetes, is to keep up to ideal weight standards, such that the body is not deprived of all the essential nutrients and vitamins.

This diet should keep the level of sugar in blood consistent and its intake can be done alone or can be combined with insulin too. As a dietician, while planning diabetic diet one should take attributes like weight, height, age, sex, physical activities being put in, blood pressure of the patient, cholesterol levels, and the type of blood sugar (there are three types of diabetes) into account. All this has to be taken into account so that appropriate diet intake is done by the patient, without compromising upon the fats, proteins, etc., intake.





One should keep this in mind that there cannot be a fixed and universal diet pattern for diabetes patients. It varies from individual to individual. Also the diet should not be rigid and boring. Each diabetic patient should consume good amount of fibers, and the meal intake should not be restricted to three meals per day, but should be expanded to four to five meals per day, consumed at small intervals. Fresh fruits, whole grains and vegetables should form a major part of diet.

Among the vegetables the available options are beans, bean sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, cooked carrots, cauliflower, greens like turnip, mushrooms, onions, etc. Among the cereals one should consume cooked cereals, grape, cooked pasta (not more than ½ cup), wheat, bread (white and/ or brown), rice chapaties, upma, spaghetti, etc. Fruits include apple, apricots, banana, blackberries, blueberries, cherries, grapefruit, kiwi, mandarin oranges, mango, peach, etc.

The proportion of all the above mentioned food items can vary from patient to patient depending upon the type of diabetes. Also one should depend upon fresh and home cooked food. The intake of alcohols and other drugs should be as moderate as possible. The motive of a diet plan is that body gets maximum energy and nutrition and as low calories as possible.
