Hypothyroidism is a pathological condition in which the thyroid gland fails to produce sufficient thyroid hormones which are necessary for maintaining the body metabolism.
Various health problems like weight gain, hair loss, dry skin, constipation, low sex drive, heavy menstrual period in women, memory loss and depression are associated with this pathological condition. Hypothyroidism leads to cretinism and myxedema.
A person suffering from hypothyroidism should follow a proper diet pattern in order to reduce its symptoms and to control the weight. He should take five to six small meals of 300 calories each rather than three big meals. This will balance the slow metabolism that is caused by hypothyroidism. In order to control the weight, fatty food should be avoided and the patient should also do proper exercise.
Plenty of fiber should be included in the diet. Fiber intake is also effective in constipation, which is caused due to hypothyroidism. Fiber also helps to loose weight. The main sources of fiber are fruits, vegetables, beans, spouts, whole grains and oatmeal. The refined grains should be avoided. A fiber in pill form can also be ingested. Fiber also keeps the blood sugar stable.
Selenium is an important trace element which is essential for proper functioning of the thyroid gland. The main source of selenium is brazil nut. Selenium is also found in fish, turkey, lean meat, soybeans and onions. Selenium helps to convert T4 into T3 and its deficiency will impair the thyroid function. Research has shown that 200 mcg of selenium per day is ideal for people suffering from hypothyroidism. Relatos Cortos
Iodine deficiency is another reason for hypothyroidism. Therefore the recommended dosage is 100 micrograms of iodine daily should be included in the diet. Fresh fish, eggs, cheddar and iodized salt have sufficient amount of iodine. Zone diet is also recommended for hypothyroidism. Under this plan the carbohydrates, proteins and fats are taken in the ratio of 40:30:30.
The dieters should keep a close watch on the consumption of the calories while eating. In order to stay within a zone is a meal should not exceed 500 calories and snack consumption should be within 100 calories. Zone diet insists on taking plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, green leafy vegetables, nuts, and at least eight glasses of water.
Vitamins play an important role in maintaining normal thyroid hormone level. Therefore food rich in vitamin A, B and C should be taken in adequate quantity. The important sources of these vitamins are fruits and vegetables specially banana, orange and carrot. Vitamin supplements can also be taken.
There are some foods that can aggravate the thyroid problems and they should be avoided.
The food like cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, mustard, green rye and oats are not good for the people suffering from hypothyroidism. Alcohol should also be avoided because it can cause blood sugar fluctuations. The intake of sugar and fats should be minimized. A proper diet regimen along with good medication will keep the thyroid gland healthy and will help to reduce the symptoms of hypothyroidism.
