The realization that Fiber is an essential nutrient has grown at a rapid stride recently. You can see packs of biscuits, snacks and even fluids with a label – “with extra fiber” – stuck on the front panel. But are these so called fiber rich foods worth trying?

It is beyond doubt that a diet rich in fiber is a potential life-saver. The chances of diabetes and heart ailment reduce and weight gain is also limited. Recent researches have also concluded that a fiber rich diet will actually help in curbing breast cancer in women and cancer of the small intestine in both men and women. But experts are of the opinion that the fiber added foods that you get on the shelves of the supermarket are not really a wise buy.



They contain what is known as ‘isolated’ fiber. These are actually the fiber which has been taken out of food items that originally had it. There is a good thing about these kind of fibers though – they are flavorless and don’t turn juice into a thick slush. The most common fibers of this type are inilin, polydextrose and maltodextrin. But as always with every new innovation there is a flip side too. There are no scientific results to prove that these fibers are effective against chronic diseases.

But still since there no known troublesome side effects you can go ahead and try the fiber added orange juice. However, eating a whole orange is much more nutritious than a glass of juice on any day. Apart from this you should also have a daily intake of grains, beans and vegetables.

If you are looking to eat fruits to add that life-saving fiber into your body then you can try any or all of the following – pear (6 gm fiber), 1 cup raspberries (8 gm fiber), 1 cup hummus (8 gm fiber) and 1 medium sized banana (3 g fiber). So we can see that though manufactured food items does claim that they have a good amount of fiber the efficacy of such is still in doubt. On the other hand, if you have an access to a daily dose of fruits, beans and vegetables then I would recommend that you go for these as nature produced fiber rich foods are still the best.
