Do you want to stop the falling of hair strands every now and then? Remember, shampooing and conditioning is essential but what goes inside your body also plays an important role in determining the health of the hair.

Hair is mostly protein, so a protein rich diet is the first thing to be included. Chicken, turkey, fish (especially salmon) and eggs are an excellent source of protein and essential fatty acids (EFA’s). EFA’s play a major role in maintaining healthy hair. For vegetarians, include soy beans, kidney beans, lentils and chickpeas. Chickpeas contain Vitamin B-6 and Zinc. Cow’s milk is good as it has absorbable iodine.

Whole wheat and oats are a good source of silica and iron. They should be included in abundance. Iron is important for producing haemoglobin. Haemoglobin is responsible for getting oxygen to the tissues of the body. Without it your hair won’t grow.

Dark green vegetables like spinach, broccolis are excellent sources of Vitamin A and C which your body needs to produce sebum. The oily substance, secreted by your hair follicles, is the body’s natural hair conditioner. They also contain iron and calcium.

Almonds are good sources of vegetarian protein, Iron and Vitamin E. Avocados are also rich in Vitamin E which stimulates blood flow throughout the body that helps hair to grow.

Carrots, sweet potatoes and apricots are rich in Vitamin A. Vitamin A is important for hair growth and follicle strength. Include more fresh fruits and vegetables (especially bright colored fruits and green leafy vegetables) to get the phytonutrients from these foods.

Citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, limes, melons and berries are a good source of Vitamin C. Vitamin C helps in the development of collagen that promotes hair growth.

Sulphur is another element that improves the health and the strength of hair. It is found in foods like meats, fish, legumes, vegetables (especially onions) and nuts.

Hair loss can also be a sign of thyroid dysfunction. To stimulate the thyroid gland, eat foods rich in iodine such as seafood and kelp.

No hair care regimen can be complete without water. Drink at least five glasses of water per day to keep the scalp hydrated and to remove toxins from the body.

Remember a healthy diet is essential for healthy hair. So stop worrying about hair fall because stress can cause more of it. Enjoy life, be happy and eat healthy.
