Gestational diabetes is a condition in which the glucose level in the blood of pregnant woman goes high and is as a result of the hormonal changes that happens during pregnancy. When the placenta grows bigger it starts to produce more hormones which may interfere with the insulin’s ability to convert glucose and thus the glucose level shoots up in the blood.
If this high blood sugar is left untreated it may harm the baby. The major aim in gestational diabetes diet is to supply essential nutrients and calories that are necessary to maintain the well being and growth of the baby and the mother and at the same time maintain the blood sugar level in good condition.
Meal Plan
The diet plan made for gestational diabetes patients should focus on small meals served at frequent intervals. Also limit the carbohydrate intake during breakfast as insulin resistance is high during this period and be consistent in the amount of carbohydrate consumed. Also consider foods that have high fiber, less sugar, less fat and drink plenty of water daily.
