Gestational diabetes is a condition in which the glucose level in the blood of pregnant woman goes high and is as a result of the hormonal changes that happens during pregnancy. When the placenta grows bigger it starts to produce more hormones which may interfere with the insulin’s ability to convert glucose and thus the glucose level shoots up in the blood.

If this high blood sugar is left untreated it may harm the baby. The major aim in gestational diabetes diet is to supply essential nutrients and calories that are necessary to maintain the well being and growth of the baby and the mother and at the same time maintain the blood sugar level in good condition.

 

Meal Plan



The diet plan made for gestational diabetes patients should focus on small meals served at frequent intervals. Also limit the carbohydrate intake during breakfast as insulin resistance is high during this period and be consistent in the amount of carbohydrate consumed. Also consider foods that have high fiber, less sugar, less fat and drink plenty of water daily. Ensure that the pregnant women are getting all the essential nutrients required for maintaining a healthy pregnancy.

 



Include calcium rich foods such as dairy products, green vegetables, calcium fortified food, unsweetened cereals etc and Iron rich foods like lean meat, fish, poultry, eggs, green leafy vegetables, enriched grain products etc in the diet. Vitamin C rich foods like tomatoes, green peppers, strawberries, oranges, grape fruits, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli etc and vitamin Todo sobre el cafe

A rich foods such as carrots, sweet potatoes, beet greens, pumpkins, spinach, cantaloupe etc are also ideal for gestational diet. Try to include at least one source of folic acid in the diet and it can be fortified grains, legumes, veal, green leafy vegetables, legumes etc.

Breakfast

Whole grain toast- 2 slices

Mid Morning Snack

Whole grain crackers- 1 serving

Low fat cheese- 2 ounces

Baby carrots- 1 cup

Mid-afternoon Snack

Raw almonds- 20

Grapes- 1 cup



Dinner



Fish of your choice- 6 ounces

Steamed broccoli- 1 cup

Brown rice- 1 cup

Reduced fat milk- 1 cup

Evening Snack

Air-popped popcorn- 5 cups

Limit the intake of alcoholic beverages, caffeine, artificial sweeteners etc and eat different types of foods to get all the vitamins and minerals required during pregnancy.
