The best thing about herbal teas is that it does not contain caffeine. This eliminates many side effects of drinking tea. It is good to replace your normal cup of tea or coffee with herbal teas. Method of Preparation

The method of making herbal teas is very simple. Boiling water should be poured over the herbs. The herb should be steeped in this water for a while. This releases the natural organic compounds into the water. Usually, about one tablespoon of a fresh herb should be sufficient for 1 cup of tea. If you are using dried herb, add about one teaspoon of the herb. If you are brewing an entire pot of tea, then add an extra teaspoon of dried or a tablespoon of fresh herb into the pot. If the water is not sufficiently hot then the flavor of the tea will get affected. Steep the herbs in hot water for about 3-10 minutes. If you like strong herbal teas then add more herbs. But, do not make the mistake of letting the herbs soak in water for a long time. If you like lighter herbal teas, then there is an easy way of getting a delicate taste of herbs also. Just add the herbs in cold water first and then bring it to boil. Strain and drink a few minutes after the water has boiled. Squeezing lemon and adding a dash of honey helps to improve the flavor of herbal teas. You can garnish the tea with herb sprigs, lemon wedges or a citrus fruit. Ensure that the utensil used for making the tea is of iron, glass or stainless steel.


Recipes for Common Ailments

This tea is excellent for curing cold and sore throat. You will need a combination of different herbs to prepare this tea. Use about 1/3 teaspoon of cinnamon, dried sage leaves, and ginger respectively. You will also need one bay leaf, which should be torn into small pieces. Throw all these herbs into a mug and pour boiling water in it. Add a dash of lemon juice in the mug.

If you like the tea sweet, then add some honey in it. Honey is very good for sore throats also. Drink this tea about 3-4 times daily until the cold is completely cured. To strengthen the immune system, make tea with herbs that have antiseptic properties. One such tea is made using cinnamon and cloves. You can steep them in water for about 5 minutes. Add honey to bring out the taste of this tea.


Recipe for Ginger Tea

This tea is excellent for curing digestive problems, colds, and headaches. Ginger tea is therefore very popular in most households. It helps immensely to provide relief from common cold. It can help with sinuses also. The gingerol helps to neutralize stomach acids and tone muscles of the digestive tract.

You can add fresh grated ginger to boiling water. Allow the water to boil for about five minutes after this. Then, after turning off the gas allow the ginger herb to steep for around five minutes. If you are using powdered ginger, then boil the water after adding the powder for about 20 minutes. You can add either brown sugar or honey in this tea.


Iced Herbal Tea

You can make an iced herbal tea also in the scorching summers. One such great chilled tea is made using spearmint, peppermint and lemon. Use equal quantities of spearmint as well as peppermint in this recipe. About 3 teaspoons of this mixture would be required. You can also use some ginger powder to flavor the tea. First, peel the lemon for making this tea. Place the lemon peels in a utensil along with the herbs. Pour boiling water over it and cover for about 10 minutes. Add ice cubes to cool the tea and serve with honey if required.
